ParticipantDeb – I asked around to a few folks in the club who had knowledge of haskaps. Here are the answers I got
From Kevin Irwin: someone (neighbor) obviously has a compatible plant for cross pollination. One needs to remember wind and bees can carry pollen quite a ways. If Haskaps were truly self fertile Dr. Bors would have that information in many of his writings so as mentioned wind and/or bees are the culprit!
From Gary Masog: Being self fruit full is unusual. Nothing in all of my readings on Haskaps have ever mentioned it except to say you may get a small fruit set with out a near by haskap.

ParticipantI didn’t get an email about this after I subscribed at the Main Member forum page. Now I’ll subscribe under the Apple topic to see what happens.

ParticipantElizabeth,
Don’t know if you were at last week’s (Jan 11th meeting) where Gary Masog did a plum presentation. When Gary gives it to me, I will be adding his presentation to our newsletter repository so it will show up when you search on plums. I will also be working on adding plums to the Fruit Varieties part of the web site (under the Research dropdown at the Home ribbon), similar to what we now have for apples.Based on interest, the club is going to order 3 bundles of rootstock. Get with Debbie Hinchey dhinchey@alaskan.com if you’d like to get some rootstock for grafting, onto as it might not all be spoken for yet.

ParticipantNope, never had the soil analyzed. Will do!
A guy in South Addition (Anchorage, near 13th and F) has a Lapins cherry. He didn’t have much, if any, winter kill this year, and it is currently loaded with fruit. He said he did have some winter kill a few years ago but on the whole it has done well. He didn’t know his rootstock. Our Lapins is on mahaleb with North Star “in stream.” I think our area (Rogers Park) is probably a few to five degrees colder than his, so we’ll see!

ParticipantGee, I wish I had that many things available to die (or live as the case may be), but here in our little Rogers Park lot (Anchorage mid-town-ish), we lost about the upper half of our 6 year old Meteor cherry (which has never produced more than a half-dozen cherries in its life…grrr). Our 11 year old Parkland apple was not damaged at all, nor were the Red Lake currants.
